It’s a rare Gea Table in orange by designer Kazuhide Takahama, born in 1930 in Mijasaki, Japan.
Kazuhide Takahama studied architecture at university in Tokyo from 1949, taking his degree in 1953. Kazuhide Takahama is, however, primarily known as a furniture and lighting designer. Kazuhide Takahama met furniture-maker Dino Gavina in Milan in 1957 and remained in Italy to design for Gavina’s firm. And later for B&B.
Kazuhide Takahama’s designs are distinguished by clarity of line and form, qualities that reveal his Japanese origins. He often combines traditional forms and techniques with Western elements in his designs.
In 1961 Kazuhide Takahama designed “Gea”, a semicircular shelving system with lacquer-coated wood [approx. 21” x 21” x 17” ].
This piece shows its age, the lacquer is warn, some chips & cracks, though still beautiful and it has its original ‘GAVINA, ITALY’ label on the bottom.
In researching, I have never seen any orange Gea’s for sale, and found only a few at auction, some in original distressed condition, and some refinished in lacquer. This high design piece does not come on the market very often, nor have I seen it in vintage modern shops. This is a rare piece!
