The DIY trend is growing ever more popular as people turn to their sewing machines rather than the mall for new threads. At the head of the curve is BurdaStyle.com, the largest online community of fashion enthusiasts, sewers, and crafters, with more than 680,000 members. Now co-founder Nora Abousteit and creative director and Project Runway alum Alison Kelly share everything you need to know for a fashion-forward wardrobe in their new book, THE BURDASTYLE SEWING HANDBOOK (Potter Craft: November 1, 2011; $29.99). Featuring five fully customizable sewing patterns to yield infinite fashion possibilities and comprehensive step-by-step instructions, this is the go-to guide for sewing hobbyists and budding designers alike.

THE BURDASTYLE SEWING HANDBOOK captures the open-source philosophy, quality sewing patterns and trendy sensibility that make BurdaStyle an internationally recognized brand. Five popular basic patterns for a blouse, skirt, dress, bag and jacket are turned into 15 distinct projects, along with dozens of user-submitted customizations for extra inspiration. By bringing the fundamentals of sewing and design offline and into the home, THE BURDASTYLE SEWING HANDBOOK is perfect for everyone from first-time sewers to lifelong seamstresses.
