Walnut shelves handmade in Gowanus. 18″ × 10″, x 7/8" thick, with contrasting maple stripes. Hangs via a simple French cleat.
The bottom edge is scraped and contoured by hand to resemble the trunk of the tree it came from. You want to touch it. The top edge is rounded a bit to soften it, and has contrasting maple stripes.
A miter joint with a spline running the length of it connects the two pieces and is incredibly strong. The wall anchors would likely fail before the joint. The French cleat is easy to install and quite sturdy.
