I hand-wove this octopus necklace, one ring at a time, using the Byzantine weave. Hanging from the center of the handwoven chain is a huge octopus pendant made from antique silver-plated brass. This guy will definitely catch people’s eye when you wear it!
The chain was woven in an alternating pattern of silver-colored, turquoise, and iridescent black with hints of green and purple when the light hits it.
The colored rings used in this octopus necklace are made from anodized aluminum, a process where the rings are dipped in an electrically charged solution and then dyed. The silver-colored rings are made from bright aluminum.
The Byzantine weave appears dense and substantial, but because aluminum is a lightweight metal, this octopus necklace is much lighter-weight than it might look.
This octopus necklace measures about 21 1/2" long including its lobster claw clasp. The octopus pendant itself is lightweight and concave on the back side, has an antiqued finish, and measures 2 1/2" wide x 2" high.
